Chiastolite
Because of the characteristic cross in the cross-section, chiastolite has been used for making amulets since ancient times. Although several theories exist regarding the formation of the chiastolite cross, the most widely accepted theory is proposed by Frondel in 1934. This theory suggests that impurities, consisting primarily of graphite, selectively adhere to the fast-growing corners of andalusite crystals. When the concentration of these impurities increases, the growth of the crystal slows down. This concentrated deposition of impurities acts as a kind of re-entry, as it is absorbed by the growth of the andalusite porphyroblast. This cycle of growth, slowing of growth and then growth again repeats, resulting in the formation of a feather-like pattern of graphite along four radiating 'arms'.
