Dendrite opal/agate (Merlinite)

Dendritic opal/agate, is an interesting variety of agate characterized by the presence of dendritic inclusions. These inclusions often resemble plant-like structures, such as branches or leaves, which gives this agate its unique and attractive appearance.

Chemically, agate is a form of quartz, specifically a variety of chalcedony, which itself consists primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). Agate is typically transparent to translucent and can exhibit a range of colors depending on the impurities present.

The dendritic patterns in dendritic agate are not formed by fossil remains of plants, as is sometimes wrongly thought, but by inclusions of mainly manganese and iron minerals. These minerals crystallize in the agate in a branched form that resembles plant dendrites. These dendritic structures often form along cracks or between layers of the host rock, resulting in the characteristic and often very detailed patterns.

The exact chemical composition of the dendrites can vary, but they often contain oxides or hydroxides of manganese and/or iron. The precise nature of these inclusions can influence the color and appearance of the dendritic patterns.
