Hematite

The name "hematite" is derived from the Greek word "haima", which means "blood". This name refers to the reddish-brown color of the powder that results when hematite is ground or when it is scratched over an unglazed porcelain plate. Although hematite in its solid form is often a steel gray or black color, the reddish-brown streak or powder is distinctive and gives the stone its blood-like appearance. Hematite is found in both sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and is a common form of iron ore. It is often found in the form of nodules, striped masses, and as shiny crystals.
